IKO stands for International Kiteboarding Organisation. The IKO Kiteboarding programs are designed to help you learn in a safe way while your IKO instructor respects your rhythm and takes you through all the steps you need to learn to reach your goals. IKO- qualified kitesurfing instructors teach to a world wide kitesurfing standard. There are three levels to become a competent kitesurfer.
Level 1 is the Discovery Kiteboarder Program. In this program our kitesurfing instructor will take you through safe wind directions and conditions for kiting, the wind window, hazards you might encounter, how to set up a kite and will then teach you how to fly and control the kite.
Level 2 is the Intermediate Kiteboarder Program. Now you will make use of all that flying knowledge you gained in Level 1. Once you complete this portion of the program you will start riding the board.
Level 3 is the Independent Level. The independent level is the stage where all those dreams and hard work pay off, as you get to feel the board on your feet! By the end of the section you will be able to start jumping and will truly be an independent rider. Then you are off to explore the world’'s different locations, water surfaces and wind strengths!
After reaching Level 1 we will issue your IKO Kiteboarder, which certifies that you have successfully reached Level 1. Don't forget to bring your IKO Kiteboarder Card back to your next lessons in order to get Level 2 and later Level 3 signed off. The good thing about your IKO Kiteboarder Card is that it is internationally recognised. Therefore, you can reach any level with any IKO Kitesurfing school around the world and you can get any level signed off by any IKO- qualified instructor, no matter where in the world you are. Once you have reached Level 3, you can rent kitesurfing equipment from any IKO- affiliated kitesurfing centre. Just present your IKO Kitesurfing Card and they will know, that you are a confident and independent kitesurfer.
Our kitesurfing lessons are run in several locations around Auckland, Matakana and Mangawhai, depending on wind, weather and your plans. All of our favourite teaching locations are located on beaches, which offer shallow and flat waters, this makes them perfect to learn kitesurfing. Here are a few of our favourite spots:
Snells Beach (one of our local spots)
At only one hour north of Auckland this is a fantastic spot to learn. The wind is generally steady, the water is shallow and the beach is uncrowded. If you are a beginner Snells Beach is best on a mid- to high tide but it is also possible to learn on low tide. Snells beach is great on North/ East, East and South/ East winds.
Omaha Estuary (one of our local spots)
Situated just down the road from famous Matakana, which you can reach within an hour drive north of Auckland, Omaha estuary is a flat water gem! The estuary is a great place to learn as the water is shallow and the beach is uncrowded. It is possible to learn on all tides.
Omaha estuary is the only spot in the Matakana area that works on South/ West winds.
Omaha Beach (one of our local spots)
Beautiful Omaha beach is situated in the famous Matakana Coast region. Omaha offers a wide, long beach, which is great on South/ East and Easterly winds under 20 knots. There is plenty to do and see in the Matakana Coast region, once you have finished your kitesurfing lesson.
Point Chevalier (Auckland)
Point Chev is practically right in Auckland city, therefore this spot is very convenient. Point Chev is great for beginners, as the water is shallow. It is possible to kite on all tides but the incoming tide is generally better. Great on any wind from North/ West to South/ West.
Cheltnemham Beach (Devonport)
Being close to Devonport, Cheltnemham beach is also a great inner city alternative (You can catch a short ferry ride from central Auckland).
Cheltnemham Beach is perfect on a mid- to low tide. This spot is good on any wind from North/ East to South/ East.
Orewa Beach
Only 30 minutes north of Auckland city, Orewa beach is a very popular kitesurfing spot. Orewa is a great place for learning, if the wind is not over 20 knots. Orewa has a wide, long, sandy beach and is good at all tides.
Mangawhai Harbour
Mangawhai is an approx. 1 3/4 hours drive north of Auckland. Mangawhai has a beautiful harbour, surrounded by big sand dunes, which fills in at mid to high tide. North to North/ East and Easterly winds are best for learning, as the wind is generally very steady. Apart from being a great kitesurfing spot, Mangawhai offers beautiful beaches, hikes and great camping and accommodation options.
We believe that it is very important to learn with great equipment, this is why we chose the 'Naish Park' to teach kitesurfing with this season. The 2012 'Naish “Park'” kites are a great all round kite. They are designed with fun in mind, one kite that does it all- any rider, any style, any condition!” With some great improvements from the last year 'Naish Park'”, as well as a super user friendly control bar and safety system, they are great for beginners through to advanced riders. With the light weight design of a three strut kite, the 'Naish Park' is an easy to fly, stable and responsive kite, which provides the crispness and feel in the bar that you really need. It also has great water relaunching abilities.
If you are thinking of buying a kite, we are more than happy to advise where to go.
